Amazing Lockheed

Post by Tailspin45 » 19 Sep 2018, 00:54

Doing some research on the Vega I discovered a lovely nugget of history thanks to Wing42: when Lockheed decided to build their first twin-engine aircraft, the Electra, they did some wind tunnel testing at the University of Michigan. An undergraduate aeronautical engineering student there warned them that the aircraft would be unstable as configured, took an interest in what they were doing, and made some suggestions that use a twin tail. They ended up hiring him when he graduated, fortunately. He was Clarence "Kelly" Johnson!
